Vampiri, odnosno pokojnici podbula lica i tela, sa izraženim očnjacima, dugom kosom i noktima, koji oživljavaju i proganjaju članove svoje porodice i zajednice, prvi put su dokumentovani upravo u Srbiji.
Naime, austougarska štampa je 1725. godine prenela izveštaj u kome se sasvim ozbiljno govori o postojanju vampira u Srbiji, a smatra se i da sama reč „vampir“, koja je opšteprihvaćena u svetu, dolazi sa ovih prostora.
Prvi srpski vampir, koji je ušao i u svetske anale, bio je izvesni Petar Blagojević iz sela Kisiljevo. Nakon njegove smrti 1725. godine, za kratko vreme, iznenada je umrlo još devet ljudi iz tog sela.
Svi oni su na samrtničkoj postelji tvrdili da ih je Petar posetio i da je pokušao da ih uguši. Pokojnog Petra u kući je navodno zatekla i njegova udovica koja je kazivala da je Petar došao da joj traži opanke. Žena se toliko prepala, da je od straha morala da pobegne u drugo selo.
Uznemireni meštani su tražili od austrougarskih vlasti dozvolu da iskopaju mrtvog Petra i da nad njegovim telom izvrše ritual ubijanja vampira.
Pod pretnjom seljana da će napustiti selo, austrougarske vlasti su to dopustile, a navodno su u selo poslali i svoje predstavnike da prisustvuju ovom činu.
Iskopano telo Petra Blagojevića sve je zaprepastilo jer nije počelo da se raspada, a, kako predanja kažu, kosa i nokti su nastavili normalno da mu rastu. Na ustima je navodno imao i tragove krvi.
Njegovo telo je ritualno spaljeno, a izveštaj o ovom događaju je odeknuo Evropom. Nakon što je objavljeno u novinama o ovom događaju se naširoko pričalo. U selu Kisiljevo od tada navodno postoji i kletva: „Dabogda te Pera posetio“.
Arnaut Pavle je bio drugi srpski poznati vampir iz sela pored Svilajnca. Bio je vojnik najamnik i često je pricao o svom susretu sa vampirom u Grckoj. Navodno, Pavle se borio sa vampirom i uspeo je da ga pobedi.
Umro je navodno 1725, iste godine kad i Petar Blagojević, a i nakon njegove smrti misteriozno su počeli da umiru ljudi iz sela. Nastala je opšta panika, pa se formirala komisija za otkopavanje tela preminulih.
Došlo se do zakljucka da je Petar zarazio još nekoliko ljudi, pa su svi leševi bili probodeni glogovim kolcem i spaljeni.
Međutim, situacija se ponovo „zagrejala“ nekoliko godina kasnije kada su ljudi iz sela počeli ponovo da umiru. Ljudi su se plašili ponovnog javljanja vampira, pa je čak navodno oformljena i straža protiv vampira. Isti proces je ponovljen sa leševima, kao u prethodna dva slučaja.
Naš najpoznatiji vampir je Sava Savanović iz sela Zarožje kod Bajine bašte. On je navodno živeo u napuštenoj vodenici i, prema predanju, napao bi svakog ko prođe pored nje i pio bi mu krv.
Spavanje u vodenici je značilo sigurnu – smrt.
Lik Save Savanovića se spominje u priči Milovana Glišića i u srpskom horor filmu „Leptirica“ iz 1973. godine.
